Koh Samui Information

Until the first backpackers started arriving in the 1970's, life on Koh Samui revolved around either the islands abundant coconut plantations or fishing. Since then it has grown into a popular holiday destination for families, couples and singles alike. A survey of 1018 tourists conducted by the Association of Thai Travel Agents (ATTA) in 1997 revealed that 81% of tourists who come to Samui say that they will come back and that they will certainly recommend the island to their friends. It is also worth noting that the dramatic devaluation of the local currency since July 1997 has made Thailand one of the least expensive exotic holiday destinations in the world.

Accommodation in Samui  ranges from Luxury to Good'n'Clean. Samui is more developed than the Far East islands of Koh Chang and Samet with fewer simple bungalows and more hotels and resorts. It is is still not as developed as most of Phuket. Which islands give the best value really depends on your own definition of what a tropical island should be like, what you want to do there and how you want to do it.

Samui itself has a variety of beaches, from the quiet and near private to long stretches of sand full of activity. Tropical islands are about beaches and water sports, and Samui & Ang Thong offer good quality fun. Boat trips abound for both travel and sheer fun - from luxury cruises to paddle yourself sea kayaks. You will be spoilt for choice of world class diving sites.

Samui and the neighboring islands have an excellent choice of transport connections: seventeen flights a day to Bangkok  and daily flights to Phuket, Krabi and Pattaya - serving  Samet and Koh Chang as well; ferry-train and ferry-bus connections along the north-south routes from Bangkok; and the car ferry making it easy to drive from or to anywhere.
